Why Roussanne?

When we are asked why we work with Roussanne, the answer is simple: texture, elegance, and the ability to age with grace. This varietal suits the Barossa remarkably well, and for us, it is a canvas to explore a style of white wine that is both intriguing and timeless.
A Variety of Character and Depth
Roussanne originates from the Rhône Valley in France, where it has long been a cornerstone of the region’s most respected white wines. Its name is derived from roux—the French word for russet, referring to the reddish-brown colour the berries take on when ripe. Classically, Roussanne is known for its aromatic lift, often reminiscent of herbal tea and wildflowers, and for its remarkable ability to carry weight on the palate while still retaining freshness.
In the southern Rhône, it finds its highest expression in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it can make up 80–100% of a blend. These wines are built to age, developing layers of honey, nuts, and savoury depth over time.
Our Australian Answer
In the Barossa, we believe Roussanne has found a natural home. The warm days allow for richness and texture, while the cool nights preserve the acidity needed for elegance. It’s a grape that responds beautifully to careful handling, fermentation, and élevage, rewarding patience with wines of real longevity.
Our inspiration has always been the wines of Chablis and Meursault. Not because we seek to copy them, but because we admire their poise, their seriousness, and their ability to express both place and time with quiet confidence. Roussanne, in our hands, is our Australian answer to those characteristics we strive for: dimension, intrigue, delicacy, and longevity.
