Vintage Journal — 2026
Week 8 | 27 April 2026

The Season
A return to warmth — four steady days at 27°C.
After weeks of movement and shifting conditions, there is a sense of the season offering a final stretch of generosity. Autumn lingers, unhurried, allowing things to come to their natural close.

Upcoming Fruit

In the Winery
All whites and rosé have now finished ferment.
The cellar begins to quiet, the pace softening as the last of the reds continue their slow course toward completion.

Life in the Winery
The 1890 Shiraz has reached dryness and now waits to be pressed — a moment that always carries weight, marking the transition from ferment to form.
Flaxman Valley Shiraz continues steadily, moving at around 2 Baumé per day — calm, measured, exactly as hoped.
With the warmth, vinegar flies have appeared — a small frustration that comes with these late-season conditions, a reminder that vintage never quite lets go without resistance.

The Work
Pressing decisions begin.
The shift is subtle but significant — from the energy of fermentation to the quiet discipline of élevage. Wines are moved, settled, and guided gently into their next phase.

Place
The warmth begins to soften at the edges.
The intensity of vintage gives way to stillness, the property returning to itself.

People
There is a quiet fatigue now, but also a sense of perspective.
The long days begin to shorten, and with that comes a moment to acknowledge what has passed through our hands.

Craft
Attention turns inward.
With ferments complete, the structure and character of each parcel begin to show themselves more clearly — early impressions forming, though much is still to unfold.

Closing Reflection
The season eases toward its end.
What was once constant motion becomes quiet observation — a shift from doing to watching.
There is always a moment at this point in vintage where the exhaustion settles in, but so too does a quiet satisfaction. The wines are now on their path, and we step back, allowing time to do its work.
