Cellaring Roussanne
Since making our first Roussanne in 2010, we noticed quite early on that these wines seemed to get better and better with age.

In those early years, it was incredibly hard to tuck some of these wines away in the cellar rather than share them, but we knew that giving Roussanne time was one of the best things we could do for the wine.

Over the years, it has become a natural part of what we do. With each vintage, we quietly tuck away a decent amount, allowing it to sit undisturbed and age gracefully until we feel the time is right to bring some of it back out.

When we began in 2010, we were so new to this variety. Now, after 17 vintages of making Roussanne, we have developed a deep appreciation and respect for it — not only for what it shows when young, but for what it can become with time.

As I say to Michael all the time, these are my little pots of gold.

One Vineyard · Six Wines · A Story Through Time

The real beauty of this six-pack is that every one of these wines comes from the same Roussanne vineyard — David Materne’s vineyard at Greenock in the north-western Barossa Valley.
So while the vintages change, and our winemaking and élevage have evolved over the years, the vineyard remains the constant.
That is what makes tasting these six wines together so interesting.
You can see the influence of each vintage, explore the different ways we have approached Roussanne over the years, and experience how the wines have developed with time in bottle. But running through all six is the same vineyard, the same soils and the same sense of place.
For us, after 17 vintages of working with Roussanne, this vineyard has taught us an enormous amount about the variety and about ourselves as winemakers.
The winemaking matters.
The vintage matters.
But most of all, the vineyard matters.
Six wines. One vineyard. Seventeen vintages of learning.

The Vineyard — Greenock, Barossa Valley
Our Roussanne comes from a single vineyard farmed by our long-time grower David Materne at Greenock, in the north-western corner of the Barossa Valley.
Planted on its own roots in 2001, the vineyard sits at approximately 300 metres elevation, with rows running east–west. The soils are a shallow layer of sandy loam, approximately 30 cm deep, over medium red clay, with ironstone also found throughout the site.
The vines are hand pruned and yields are kept low, generally around 2.5–3 tonnes per acre, helping to maintain concentration, natural balance and texture in the fruit.
We have worked with Roussanne from this vineyard for 17 vintages, and over that time have come to understand not only the site, but how beautifully its wines can develop with age.
The vineyard gives us Roussanne with texture, structure and depth, while retaining the freshness and balance that we look for in our wines. It is a site that has become incredibly important to us and to the story of Roussanne at Yelland & Papps.
