White peach, green melon, ripe lemon, some honey and white flower perfume, nougat and biscuit spice. It’s flinty and dry, has cool acidity to balance stone fruit and yellow kiwi fruit, some nutty and saline elements, closing crisp and long with nuts and citrus tang. So nicely done. Impressive.

A beautiful drink as ever, the Roussanne that comes from Yelland & Papps is always impressive. This 2024 walks with that Clooney charm but has the shape and swagger of Hemsworth.
Made from free run juice, it was wild yeast fermented before seeing a mix of new and seasoned French oak. Lemons, lemon balm, white fleshed stonefruit and a slight dribble of honey make the first impression. A composed textural presence comes with the territory and this has been aided by regular batonnage. The fruit has lift and vibrance yet enough class to resist skipping all over the place. A wine that holds itself with poise and charm, the creamy and brioche texture builds some fabulous momentum. This is well worth tracking down.

I’ve always liked the way these guys treat this Rhône-style variety. It’s a wine that offers complexity and intensity with a vibrant and appealing mouthfeel. It was basket pressed into new and neutral oak for natural fermentation, and then regular lees stirring over 8 months has allowed the fruit and the wine to build textural complexity. In the end, it was a barrel selection of the best barrels to make up the wine. There’s a lemony, creamy character here with a fine, subtle oak infusion. A nice crisp acidity keeps it tight and fine, yet that brilliantly rich texture emerges and carries effortlessly through to a long finish.

The Barossa Valley is marvellously well suited to Rhône red varieties – we all know that – and now we are seeing more producers embrace Rhône whites. This is a top example, all honeysuckle, wildflowers and citrus wrapped up in a warm textural hug. Comes to life in high aromatic scents of citrus blossom, honeysuckle, spring wildflowers, citrus and lightly spiced apple. It’s a textural wine, moving smoothly, creamily, across the tongue bringing a mix of gentle savoury almond amid flavours of ripe apple, pear, citrus, quince and spice. It’s a subtle effect which runs deep . . . very Roussanne.

Y&P nail this variety, year on year. Golden hues and then scents of pear, honeysuckle and almond skin. Stonefruit and preserved lemon flavours roll across the palate, edged by ginger spice and chamomile. Broad yet elegant texture, waxy and smooth with a clean line of acidity. A poised, characterful expression, both generous and quietly refreshing.

Upside down pineapple cake, baked peaches and lemon butter. A hint of jasmine flowers and bee pollen. Fruit is decidedly ripe with pure notes of orchard fruit and golden rays of citrus. A uniform line of acidity takes this vintage into another level of exquisiteness, a very complete and harmonious wine. Some sugared almonds and hazelnut skin bitterness on the finish. This is drinking well now and will flow into its savoury and nutty self with more time in the cellar, say 3-5 years further. Serve this with a creamy chicken, artichoke and leek pie and you’ll sleep soundly, floating on a food and wine pairing cloud.

From a single site in Greenock. Free run juice, wild fermented and matured in a balance of new and seasoned French oak puncheons.
Light to medium straw-gold colour. Rich nose of poached peach, honeysuckle and cooking toffee. A big wine with loads of ripe stone fruit layered over clarified butter, hazelnut nougat and hints of wood shavings. Goes long, folding upon itself throughout the palate, acidity working quietly and a gentle tannic brush ensuring the finish is both poised and precise. (Cork)
