Shiraz sourced from the 1960-planted vines of the Old Bamboo vineyard in Greenock. Deeply coloured with fruit tones of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry with hints of baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, polished leather, cedar, earth and pressed flowers. There’s a distinct ‘old school’ feel to this wine, compared to some of the other contemporary offerings for Y&P. Dusty oak increases in volume on the palate, the tannins are fine and powdery and the finish is comforting and traditional.

Yelland & Papps 2019 #barossavalley #LIMITED #Cuvee #shiraz– 1960 #oldvine-(under cork) Deep, dense colour, gentle bouquet with a hint of black olives & plenty of vanillin oak. A gorgeous palate, rich with some smoky characters & ripe red fruits. It has a long lingering exquisite finish. TOP STUFF!!

With a brighter personality compared to its 2018 sibling, this Yelland & Papps Limited Cuvee 2019 stands with arms wide open possessing interest and vibe. Oozing moreishness, this is a classy old school Shiraz.
From 1960s vines planted in the Barossa sub-region of Greenock, the two releases are certainly two very different wines. The colour of this 2019 captures the eye immediately. Polished through the mouth with a fabulous depth and blanket of comforting warmth, ripples of delicate spices really show their hand here.
Baked blueberries, mulberries and dark plums muse with a little clove, licorice and some dark soy for good measure. Dark chocolate and chocolate brownie swoop late with cedar and five spice. But that length! It just purrs. Delightful drinking be sure to decant well for best results. Find me with a glass or two chilling out in front of a fire on a cool evening.

There is a distinct contrast between the 2018 and the 2019 Shiraz. Where the ’18 is a little more old school Barossa – dense, concentrated, oak-fuelled – the ’19 bursts in energy and brightness. Is this the role of vintage or youth? Either way, both wines bring something to the glass. Here, we see black cherries, plum, earth and the liveliest of spices bringing impressive intensity of Shiraz flavour. The wine has real presence, bright in fruit, medium bodied, fine, dense tannins and a lovely textural allure. It makes for highly enjoyable drinking right now, but also has undoubted further ageing ability – the best of both worlds.

This edition comes from grapes sourced from the 1960-planted vines called the Old Bamboo vineyard in Greenock. Here we begin to see the transformation of ripe red and black fruit into something more brooding and savoury. Dried cherries in chocolate, rhubarb stem and sandalwood. Opening to black cardamom, clove and coffee liqueur. Soft and supple tannins and a hint of sweetness across the palate. It’s vanilla pods and it’s indulgent. Drink now and serve with aged cheddar and homemade chutney.

This gets a little less oak than the powerhouse 2018 and as a result it is a more elegant and stylish wine. It’s more medium weight but with tremendous intensity and drive. Fine chalky tannins, a little creamy oak and a lift of spices. Supple texture and a very long finish complete an exceptional wine.
