I’ve had a lot of Grenache in my time, and I must say, this Yelland & Papps Limited Cuvée sits on top of the pile. Wow! What an incredible, precise and insatiably delicate release this is.

There’s a wonderful sense of Pinosity here, reinforcing the old saying that Grenache is everything Pinot wants to be. Sourced from dry-grown 1956 Vine Vale vines rooted in sandy soils and matured for 11 months in French oak (32% new), it’s an effortlessly elegant expression.

Juicy blueberries, blueberry coulis, mulberries and red cherries glide across the palate, with a fine smear of squishy raspberries bringing irresistible charm. The superfine tannin profile is utterly seductive, allowing the fruit to float gracefully through the mouth before subtle cola notes emerge with air. Delicate spices wrap themselves around the fruit and linger across a finish that is both persistent and calming. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this evolve over several days, confirming it has plenty of life ahead.

Just wow! A sublime expression of Barossa Valley Grenache.

Limited Cuvée Grenache 2025
Quiet and subdued aromas benefit from a good swish of air before
opening to reveal a richer style of grenache in earth, choco-mint aromas,
blackberries, blackcurrant pastille, cherry and woodsmoke. A light oaky
smokiness opens on the palate with twig, herbs, black fruits, anise,
chocolate and mint, delivered on hearty chocolaty tannins. Generous and
smooth. Now–2036

Layton and Carlin both chose this wine for their top six wines from the tasting. Layton described “strawberry jam and confected lollies on the nose – raspberry, strawberry, and primary fruit. The palate opens with some nice weight, and the mouthfeel is full and silken. Some stemmy texture gives this an edge – and although slightly underripe, those stems add a level of wood and pyrazine spice which adds complexity, a nice balance, and just enough character. The palate is altogether thick and silken – a bit like chewing liquid velvet. The crunchy red fruits – cranberry soft and fleshy in the mouth – are an assault on the senses. Afternoon autumn drinking at its best!” Carlin noted that this is “a wine that’s not here to play – with searing acidity swooshing in off the bat, this wine packs a punch. Equal parts beautifully delicate violets and glacé cherries, accented by Dr. Pepper wildness – this is carbonic maceration done well, reminding us that tutti frutti isn’t always the end-game, but sometimes a stop along the way.”
