Wines - 2015 Devote Roussanne


The Wine


Big fans of the Roussanne are we at Yelland & Papps! It’s a variety that is probably most famous for a raft of delicious wines from the Rhone Valley in France from Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph in the North to the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape & Côtes du Rhone in the South. The Barossa goes alright also! The Devote is our top-of-the-line Roussanne, basket-pressed, barrel fermented with maturation in older, seasoned French oak barrels, it’s a wine that is all about drive, texture and deliciousness.

Mid-straw in hue with inviting aromas of pear and green apple along with pithy lemon and citrus fruits flowing from the glass. Hints of lemon curd, apple turnover, soft spice, nougat, marzipan, guava, white flowers and creamy notes join in the action also making the mouth water in anticipation.

Crisp and vibrant as it enters the mouth the 2015 Yelland & Papps Devote Roussanne shows fruit flavours of Meyer lemon, nashi pear, crunchy green apple and lighter notes of white peach and guava as it flows energetically across the palate. It sits at the lighter end of medium-bodied and displays hints of soft spice, marzipan, almond paste, kaffir lime leaf, clotted cream and lighter notes of clotted cream and gentle vanillin French oak. There’s plenty of verve to the wines gait, as a seam of crisp, steely acidity propels it along to a finely balanced, persistent finish that fades gradually with hints of citrus, pear, jasmine and soft spice. Match this with lighter white meat dishes and any sort of seafood and you’ll be winning.

The Winemaking

Picked and crushed on 12th of February, the fruit was basket pressed to avoid any harsh phenolics prior to settling and racking to barrel on 16th of February. The wine was then fermented in barrel for up to 3 weeks until sugar dry and then was lees stirred to create texture and mouth feel, twice a month for 6 months. After maturing in 100% French oak (29% new) for a total of 8 months, the wine was then racked from barrel on 11th November to be stabilized and filtered prior to bottling.
