Yelland & Papps Barossa Valley

About Us

Yelland & Papps are for wine lovers and enthusiasts looking for individual, elegant and distinctive wines made in small quantities. Those wanting a connection with a small family winery that are passionate about what they do and hands on with all aspects, practicing old world techniques in a new world way and continually pushing boundaries but respecting the traditions of the famous Barossa Valley.

Yelland & Papps is a 1st generation husband and wife team starting in 2005 in the iconic Barossa Valley, using a minimal intervention approach to create elegant, structured fruit forward wines to enjoy in a social aspect or can cellar gracefully for many years to come.

Today Michael and Susan own a small vineyard on the valley floor outside of Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley and have two young children, Peyton and Campbell living amongst their Winery and Tasting Room. They do not feel they fit in a winemaking box and do not adhere to rules of whether they are unconventional or traditional, they just adhere to what they believe in and making the style that they love.

In the winery there a focus on using a lot of whole bunch fermentation, no filtration, larger format oak and putting 100% whole bunches in puncheons and letting them sit for up to a year in some cases. All wines are wild fermented, unfined, vegan friendly and unfiltered with only a couple whites being filtered.

It encompasses not only the old-vine material of the Barossa, but names familiar to all such as Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro all make an appearance in the Yelland & Papps range. It’s a passion for the future stars of the Barossa, varieties such as Vermentino, Carignan, Roussanne, varieties that are well-suited to Australia’s most famous wine region and the proof is in a glass of Yelland & Papps wines.

Their wines showcase fruit as the hero and using a lighter touch with fine grain oak, make wines that are delicate and elegant. Using minimal inputs during the winemaking process to allow the fruit to speak in a clear voice, uncluttered by overzealous oak and a heavy hand.

The Yelland and Papps story perhaps doesn’t fit in with the usual line spun by wineries in the Barossa - six generations of this, five generations of that. It is a story about new beginnings, a story about a young couple, with a young family, forging their own path within a wine region as first-generation winegrowers. While not locals...there is a saying in the Barossa that you have to have a grand-parent “in the ground” before you are considered a local...Susan Yelland and Michael Papps call the Barossa home and are as passionate as any sixth-generation Barossan about the region, its vines and its history and its characters. They have been blessed with the opportunity to own a piece of history in the Barossa Valley that dates back to 1846, that they respect and cherish the history.

Rated one of the “Ten Best New Wineries in Australia” by James Halliday in 2009 and awarded 5 stars in James Halliday Australian Wine companion 2009 to 2020.

The wines of Yelland & Papps have certainly hit a chord with wine press gaining rave reviews in James Halliday’s Wine Companion, Nick Stocks Good Wine Guide, Winefront, James Suckling, Huon Hooke, Young Guns of Wine, The Adelaide Review Hot 100. But it is the wine drinker that has come to love and appreciate the wines of the new Barossa that Yelland & Papps represent. Balanced, flavoursome and food-friendly offerings that are produced in a thoughtful fashion, respecting the history of the Barossa and the land from which they come from.
