2014 Grenache Shiraz Magnums 10 YRS (not yet released)
If there was one word to describe 2014 and this time of our life and business, it was hard!
Every day brought challenges and difficulties, it was tough.
When you start this business all the niceties are at the forefront, making the wine you want to make, doing what you love every day, but that only lasted a few years and then when you are trying to make this business stand on its own two feet, reality quickly and forcefully takes over.
Your world is turning very quickly, decisions are getting made quickly, and there is no clear air to think about, and there are numerous nay-sayers on the side telling you what you need to do.
Let’s not forget two young children four and six needing us more than ever, but also at an age they were happy just being near our side.
We eventually locked ourselves away in 2018, restructuring our business and just going back to the two of us, to focus on the wine and our business.
Challenges and difficulties from then on become more easier to navigate and with clear thought and time to make decisions right for us.
As to this wine was made in the 2014 vintage. Michael and I are amazed at what we achieved, it was a time of pushing boundaries, we were on a high of experimenting and showing what we could do. A new vineyard grower approached us and we wanted to see a technique we had read about and how this would express itself with Barossa fruit.
These varietals were fermented and Elevage separately and then put together as a final blend and we intended to only release in magnum format. As the last ten years have come with some challenges, these wines have been sitting to the side in magnum ready for me to label and release. A time capsule of a difficult time but also a memory that it doesn’t have to always be that way.
Hints of Campari rose petal dried herbs, super fine tannins, beautiful length structure shows terroir transparently, hue between light red and orange
Blend of Grenache and Shiraz 100% whole cluster ferment. Left on skins for 317 & 318 days 100% whole cluster in puncheon basket pressed off after 317/318 days back to back to Elevage for a further one year
Bottle maturation for 8-9 years 13.6% alc Modra Vineyard Marananga
