New Release

Posted 12 July 2018

The Devote Greenock Shiraz is where it all began for Yelland & Papps.
Now our twelfth release this fruit still amazes us on its consistent quality and elegance.
Being the first wine we ever made there is some emotion and reflection on this wine.
This wine has grown like our journey as we become more confident in our wine style and where wines sit in our portfolio.
The Devote has the history, it is the back bone and where our learning and appreciation has come from. The Devote Greenock is the largest parcel of fruit that we take, takes the longest time to process in a very hands on small winery.
Should you get sentimental over wine? Absolutely, that is what makes wine so memorable and yes, we do get emotional when we taste certain wines and think about wine.
So, cheers to another vintage, cheers to the growers and cheers to the journey.
Happy cellaring, happy tasting, and happy life.

SECOND TAKE Range throws the traditional Australian winemaking book out the winery door to practice

more old world techniques. New world wine in an old world way

Second Take for us started in 2012, when we decided to stop and reflect on the wines we were making.

In particular, looking at the style of wines that we made in 2011 which we loved. We also looked at the

wines that gave us pleasure to drink, and decided to release a range of wines that were aligned with our

drinking preferences. We picked early, assuring the flavour profile was right and stems were tasting

sweet, so we could achieve a very bright, textural wine and used seasoned French Oak to let the fruit

speak for itself. Since 2012 we have experimented with the level of whole bunches in the ferments each

vintage.

The Second Take Grenache is how we here at Yelland & Papps see the variety – fresh, textural, and just

drop dead sexy. Think Barossa Pinot and you are on the right track. Each year the whole-bunch

component changes, which adds a wonderful lift and detail to the wine.

The Divine is the story of outstanding vineyards that need to be recognised.

Exceptional fruit that comes in the  winery and enlivens our passion with how
near perfect the fruit is. It represents the terroir, the climate, the presence of
the Barossa in one single bunch. Our job is to find these amazing vineyards that
are at an elite quality and make them in a respectful way that lets the vineyards
and the fruit speak. Elegant oak, longer maturation time and patience brings with
it a truly memorable wine. This story will be ongoing as we push to find more
exceptional single vineyards and highlight varieties at their absolute optimum.

There is something soulful and soothing about a Barossa Shiraz with a little bit of age and some extended time in under seasoned French oak under its belt. Even a couple of years distance from its birth year sees the arrival of a raft of complex flavours, the primary fruit edge, though not dulled begins to recede slightly, the fruit/oak integration harmonises and savoury characters begin to enter the fray… for us as winemakers, and hopefully for you as wine drinkers, it is a fascinating exercise. 2013 was an excellent vintage here in the Barossa and we reckon this particular wine resonates with the deep, resonant aromas and flavours of the Western Barossa that we just love. Its a wine that sits comfortably in the ‘classic’ style that the region is so well known for . We have become fans of doing things a bit differently in our winery but with this wine we are certainly paying homage to our pure Barossa roots. Deep red in the glass with aromas of ripe, plush black fruits - dark plum, blackberry and blackcurrant notes come through on the nose underscored with notes of creme de cassis and kirsch. There are hints of fruitcake spice, roasting meats, licorice, macerated cherries and lovely, well-integrated vanillin French oak. In the mouth the wine seems for calm and smooth with a pleasing initial flow of fruit onto the palate. Again, dark plum, blackberry and blackcurrant show their faces along with rich creme de cassis notes. There is a definite savoury edge to the palates shape, lovely fruit weight and texture and note of spice, roasting meats and dreamy oak sashaying about in the background. The tannins, ripe and fine, fall like a curtain through the wine lending support and the finish lingers beautifully. Crack it open with friends.
