Wines - 2019 Second Take Grenache
Stunning light and bright strawberry colour that sets this wine up for the nose and palate.
With a gorgeous aromatic herbal cherry character (pinot noir like) with hints of sweet green stems
and a slight menthol characteristic.
This Grenache is smooth with soft tannins and a beautiful palate length and balance of acidity.
Fond memories of our 2011 Devote Old Vine Grenache are present and pleasantly reminising.
The Second Take Grenache is picked in early March allowing some natural acidity to the wine. The
fruit is all hand picked and delivered to our winery bin by bin as we are extremely lucky to live at
the other end of the road of the Schild vineyard. As fruit is delivered we select picking bins for
whole bunching and bins for whole berry ferment. A portion of the fruit is placed in an open
fermenter with 50% whole bunch on the bottom and 50% whole berry on top.
A portion is placed into puncheons as complete whole bunches and left for carbonic maceration,
and the remaining portion is left in a picking bin for some old fashion foot stomping. These wines
spend an average of 14 days on skins and then basket pressed back to puncheons, with an average
of 14% new French oak for the next 11 months.
Vintage 2019 ended up as having extremely high quality fruit but below average yields, a season that
started out dry and stayed that way with below average rainfall. The vintage tackled everything from
lack of rainfall , frost, windy conditions at flowering caused issues and a hailstorm just put the season
on a back foot. An early season start to picking ensured most fruit ripened quicker due to smaller
Kevin Schild - Vine Vale 1953 - Grower / Vineyard
We first started getting this fruit from Kevin's Father Ron (later deceased) back in 2013. Tempted to
pull them out for the more profitable Shiraz grape, we convinced Ron and Kevin to spare these old
vines. With a bit of love Kevin has lifted the quality of the Grenache to the next level and is now the
back bone of the Second Take Grenache every year.
This vineyard planted in 1953 with rows running east west on some beautiful sandy top soil and
below lies rich heavy loam all contributing to produce a healthy and aromatic Grenache.
Tim Liersch - Tanunda 1920-1925 - Grower Vineyard
We started working with the Liersch family in 2012 taking a small parcel of this amazing old Grenache.
We are allocated just two rows of this vineyard as it is shared amongst two other winemakers. We are
grateful to be able to receive the rows we do as this fruit is usually destined to our Divine Grenache
and every berry counts. In 2019 we had a small portion left over which, when added to the blend of the
Second Take Grenache helped enhance the wine and improved the structure. This vineyard sits on
the southern out skirts of the Tanunda township, and runs east west up a westerly facing slope of
stunning red brown earth over limestone. To the east is fractured shale and mudstone interspersed
with quartz, ironstone and calcoreous clay to the west.
