Wines - 2015 Devote Greenock Shiraz
Our Devote range of wines has evolved over time, as we fine tune the wines to better reflect both the site and region, but also the prevailing climatic conditions over a particular growing season. We are after an accurate snapshot of both site and vintage, so tweaks to picking times, cellar practices, and oak elevage have been necessary over the years and we are most happy where the wine sits today with this, our 11th release.
We used to share the fruit off this Greenock vineyard with one other winery, but today we have sole access to the grapes and in turn have control over the vineyard management and picking dates which make us very happy. Here we also alter course and instead of using 100% French Oak, we add in a percentage of Saury fine-grain, medium-toast American Oak which is perfectly suited to the fruit from this particular vineyard.
Deep red/purple in the glass with classic Barossa aromas of black plum, blackcurrant and macerated summer berry fruits with some mulberry and bluebery lift. Hints of fruit cake spice, black licorice, creme de cassis, frangipani, kirsch and wafts of gentle vanillin oak.
In the mouth with 2015 fruit it is beautifully weighted; rich and opulent without seeming overbearing and there is crunch and vitality to its line. Again, deep resonant black plum and berry fruits lead the way followed by hints of fruitcake, deep spice, licorice, purple flowers, earth and deftly judged spicy oak. It’s smooth and seductive on the palate with ample super-ripe tannins for support and a bright seam of acidity adding propulsion. An exercise in Greenock fruit purity.
Naturally fermented on skins in an open fermenter for 17 days and then gently basket pressed, this small parcel of wine was then transferred to new (14%) and old (86%), American (23%) and French (77%) hogsheads for 21 months of maturing. Once matured the wine was bottled unfiltered and then spent several months maturing in bottle in our warehouse prior to release.

The grapes were grown on the outskirts of Greenock, home of some of the most extraordinary grapes. Vines were planted in the mid 1980’s in sandy loam topsoil over light clay. Cropped at less than 1 tonne per acre. The vineyard was harvested on 17th February when optimum flavours and balance were achieved in the grape.
