Yelland & Papps Barossa Valley

Wines - 2015 BB Pinot Blanc (last vintage) - on special

The Wine

The blending of two simpatico grape varieties is a beautiful thing. Theres a bit of gestalt kicking in here with the final wine being perceived as more than the sum of its parts. Thats the art of the blend. Its not uncommon to see wines in Europe produced from field blends where different grape varieties are planted in the same vineyard and harvested and vinified together. Theres some old mixed planting vineyards in the Barossa too, though that was more likely the case of dodgy cuttings management rather than design. But enough of me ramblin. This is our 2015 version of two great mates, that seem to get on very nicely indeed - Pinot Blanc & Pinot Gris.

Pale straw in the glass with fruits aromas of crunchy green apple, grapefruit, nashi pear and a touch of paw paw. Hints of honeysuckle, clotted cream, dried honey and a waft of jasmine. The initial fruit attack on the palate is quite focussed before swelling and gaining texture and weight on the mid-palate. Again fruit characters of apple, pear and grapefruit dominate with a touch of guava and paw paw. Light hints of white flowers, crushed stone and dried honey appear before the wine slips across the palate and finishes with a bright, energetic, dry finish. Again, seafood is your friend with this wine or perhaps match it with light chicken dishes.

The Winemaking

The Pinot Blanc was hand picked on 12th February, destemmed and whole berry basket pressed together prior to a 12 day cold ferment.

The Pinot Gris was hand picked on 13th February, destemmed and whole berry basket pressed prior to a 7 day ferment.

Both parcels then spent 3 months resting on its yeast lees to develop some texture and mouth feel.

This wine has had minimal intervention to retain all purity, then blended and filtered prior to bottling.
